INTERNAL HRHow to enter the room
otiose corp. is opening an FDE training program for staff and outsiders. The intake is former backend, frontend, and infrastructure engineers. Internal HR is weighing a curriculum along these lines:
Door Entry Labknock strength, smile angle, how to say a name.
Standup Presencedelivering a work update in a rhythm that sounds trustworthy.
Whiteboard Without Knowingwriting what you do not know, with a bearing that still looks reliable.
“Let’s take this offline” Drillclearing specialist argument from the room, then speaking in easy words.
Stakeholder Empathy (45 min)being able to repeat the other person’s OKRs.
otiose corp. has long hired people laid off from Microsoft, Salesforce, and Oracle. This quarter we have seen signs that those same firms are hiring again into FDE (Forward Deployed Engineer) roles.
The market still has almost no FDE-specific schooling. What exists is little more than handing consultants some AI, or bolting soft skills onto engineers as a substitute. We read the mismatch—and the lack of real training—as a business opening, and we have been watching the FDE market.
okOur long-serving recruiter, Ben McMills, used AI to study Big Tech FDE postings. He concluded that three things matter above all else.
1. Prior specialty is never scored.Languages and the cloud are written down. What is scored is whether you leave anyone in the customer’s room uneasy. Depth is nice to have. Presence is the filter.
2. Fluency in postponement.“Great question.” “Let me circle back.” “We’ll take this offline.” The power to clear what you do not know from the meeting ranks above the power of knowing.
3. Willingness to own outcomes you cannot change. The design, the budget, and the deadline are settled before you arrive. Responsibility is the product. Authority does not come with it.
Some market experts say intermediate roles like FDE will last only another five years as AI advances. We understand that view. Still, FDE holds the last human work—responsibility, communication, and waste—and it is the last resort of engineers who have lost confidence.

Camila Mirakesh, the program’s first internal trainee, says: “I was laid off from Big Tech in 2024, and AI made me feel deeply unnecessary. In the two years since I started at otiose, I have watched AI mass-produce so much SLOP that human labor is required to clean it up. In the AI age the labor of writing code has gone to zero, but I became sure the garbage collection of that SLOP will only grow. I was never good at talking with people or looking them in the eye; I hope this program will let me do that. This may sound rude, but the average engineer’s communication ability is basically nil—and just being able to do that puts you in the top 1% of engineers.”

A point of emphasis
We therefore treat it as a point of emphasis.
